J. CORTNER Henry Joseph Cortner was born May 3, 1854, near Farmland, Ind. He was next to the youngest of a large family, all of whom have passed on except two brothers, Rev. J. R. four years older and Levi two years younger, both residing in Indiana. Three brothers and three sisters preceded him in death. They were of a sturdy pioneer stock that hewed their way through the forests and helped to build the great commonwealths of Indiana and Minneapolis. Mr. Cortner's first marriage was of a few short years, having one son that lived a short time. His second marriage was blessed with six children, three daughters dying in infancy. A son Mearl M. lives in Detroit, a son LaVern in Blackfoot and a daughter Mrs. C. R. Lowery resides near Boise. There are seven grandsons and two granddaughters who with his bereaved companion and many other relatives and friends will miss him for his was a strong character for righteousness and he was beloved by all. He was a high-school professor until about thirty years of age, when because of failing health he changed from the damp climate of Indiana to that of Minnesota. He purchased one of the most fertile farms in the big woods of the Mississippi valley, 125 miles northwest of Minneapolis. By continued hard work in the 18 years residing there he cleared 100 acres of heavy oak, iron and basswood land so that a binder could be used over the land. After residing there 18 years his health again failed and another change of climate was sought. That section of Idaho known as "God's Country" was the place selected. For 15 years he lived on a farm near Payette. He liked his new home in the farther west and seemed to have obtained a new lease on life. In 1917 he sold his farm and purchased property in the Boise and Hagerman valleys, having made his home in the latter place the greater part of the time since. His health seemed to be even better in Hagerman valley, with its health filled spring water and drier climate. He often said he was willing to spend the remainder of his life here, which he did. After completing a full day's labor, at the dawn of the first day of October, without even a struggle he quietly slipped away to join the throng he so much loved to sing and talk about. The slumber was peaceful and the waking must have been happy. Those who knew him are familiar with his strong convictions for right things. He became a Christian early in life and always maintained his strong faith in God and the work of the kingdom. He, with his family were member so the Christian church, but for convenience united with any Evangelical church that might be near, having been members of the Congregational and Presbyterian churches. He was ordained an elder of the Presbyterian church of Payette in 1905, and had been teacher of the Methodist Bible class most of the time since he came to the Hagerman valley. His greatest delight was in Christian service. He was the oldest person actively engaged in farming in Hagerman valley, farming the 40 acre farm where he lived at the time of his death. Mr. Cortner was buried in Morris Hill cemetery, Boise, after funeral services by Rev. Crosby Ross, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, where Mr. Cortner held his church membership. Services were also held at home at Hagerman by Rev. Earl Officer, pastor of the M. E. church where Mr. Cortner worshiped and taught the adult Bible class almost all the time since going to Hagerman. -- Gooding Leader.
