Crosswhite died instantly when the pickup truck he was driving was struck by a Union Pacific freight train at Seventh Avenue railroad crossing in downtown Payette. This accident involving a train-car collision was the eighth such accident in the past three years, and the third in the past month in Payette. Payette police who investigated the accident said the boy was thrown from the pickup when the train struck the vehicle. The vehicle was owned by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Schultz of Payette. Union Pacific engineer Floyd A. Wise told police he saw the truck just before it entered the Seventh Street crossing. He said the driver did not appear to slow down at the crossing. Engineer Wise said he applied the emergency brakes on the engine, and blew the whistle and sounded the bell, but it was too late and the engine hit the pickup and dragged it 54 feet down the track. The pickup was termed "a total wreck" by Payette police. The victim of the accident was a student at the Payette high school.
