Mr. Darnell who had been employed for the past ten years as ditch rider for the company, was engaged with other men in constructing a concrete tap near the Creasey ranch south of New Plymouth. They had set fire to some weeds along the ditch the night previous and left, believing the fire was out, however, during the night the fire burned down one of the poles to the high power line that follows the ditch bank, which fell, carrying the live wires to the ground. When Nick Vandenberger, one of the helpers arrived Monday morning he found Mr. Darnell's body where he had evidently been instantly killed. According to information received, he left town about seven o'clock and from all indications, with a bucket still in his hands and tracks leading from a barrel of water to the burning pole, he had endeavored to extinguish the fire and approached too near the high power wire. His body was brought to the Peterson Undertaking Parlor at Payette and the funeral was held from the New Plymouth Congregational church, Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Darnell was 66 years of age and one of the most highly respected citizens in Payette county and leaves many close friends who were shocked and grieved at his tragic death. He is survived by a wife and four children. The children are Mrs. Dan Langletz, Roy and Glenn Darnell, all of New Plymouth, and Rose Darnell who lives in British Columbia.
