Garrett, 48, of New Plymouth was killed instantly early Saturday morning when the car he was driving crashed into the back of a truck two miles southeast of Payette on Highway 52. The accident occurred about 1:30 a. m. and Garretts' car was east bound when it hit a stalled truck on the highway, according to sheriff Ray Stephens who investigated the accident. The truck was driven by Irvin E. Stump of San Pablo, California. The truck had gone into the ditch Friday afternoon when its load of plywood from Portland had shifted breaking the binder chain and tipping it over and spilling the load. Stump was injured in the accident and taken to the Ontario hospital where he remained until Sunday. The spilled plywood was cleaned up Friday afternoon and the truck lifted from the barrow pit preparatory to being towed away when the car driven by Garrett struck it. Payette county corner Gifford Shaffer called an investigation jury in the matter Tuesday, but the nine-man group recessed until Thursday afternoon when they will again sit in on the case. Mr. Garrett was born February 21, 1911 in Kennewick, Washington. He moved to the Payette and New Plymouth area three years ago. He was employed as a bartender and musician at Joe's Club in Payette at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife Hannah Flock Garrett of New Plymouth and his mother Mrs. Ocie Garrett of Payette. He was the brother of Roy, Harold and Robert Garrett, all of Portland; Mrs. C. B. Clifton of Eureka, California; a sister Mrs. Gerald Horn, Fruitland; nine step-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2 p. m. Tuesday at the New Plymouth Shaffer memory Chapel with the Rev. William Clark officiating. Interment was at Park View in New Plymouth.
