Highway Crash Fatally Injures Fruitland Man
 
Pete Grischkowsky Dies As Result Of Two Car Collision At Road Intersection
 
No inquest will be held to investigate the Monday afternoon highway collision 
which claimed the life of Peter M. Grischkowsky, Payette county's first 
traffic fatality of 1953, Gifford Shaffer, coroner, said today.
 
Grischkowsky, 74, died in the Ontario hospital yesterday morning from severe 
injuries suffered in the two car accident.  He had been a long-time resident 
of Fruitland, moving into the district in 1909 from his native Russia.
 
The fatal collision ended a perfect highway string of 283 deathless days on 
county roads, Sheriff Ray Stephens pointed out.  His office stated that the 
last fatality here was Daniel Schrock, Boise resident who was killed November 
14.
 
Second Monday Accident
The fatal accident was the second collision within a five minute period Monday 
afternoon, according to E. C. Marty, sheriff's deputy.  Grischkowsky's 
automobile was hit broadside by another vehicle driven by Burt Crowther, a 
Payette well driller, as the two vehicles entered the intersection of two 
county roads one mile south and a mile east of Fruitland, the officer's report 
stated.  Both men were alone in their cars, Marty said.
 
Crowther estimated his speed at the time of the accident at 40 miles per 
hour.  He had been driving south on Elmore avenue.  Grischkowsky was driving 
east on an intersecting road.  He was rushed to the Holy Rosary hospital with 
chest injuries.  Crowther did not require hospitalization.
 
After investigating the circumstances of the accident, Coroner Shaffer decided 
against holding an official inquest.  No charges have been placed by 
investigating officers.
 
Earlier Wreck Reported
Five minutes earlier, at 1:45 Monday afternoon, a truck driven by George Flack 
of New Plymouth, collided with a pickup driven by Earl Taylor of New 
Plymouth.  Flack was driving west on a county road and Taylor's vehicle was 
moving south when they met at an intersection one mile southwest of New 
Plymouth.
 
After the collision, Flack's truck skidded 80 feet and flipped over.
 
Taylor and his wife, a passenger in his pickup, were taken to New Plymouth and 
received emergency treatment for rib injuries.
No citations were issued.
 
Survivors Named
The victim of the fatal accident, Peter Martin Grischkowsky, is survived by 
his widow, Eva of Fruitland; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Helen Stockton and Mrs. 
Florence Carpenter, both of New Plymouth; a stepson, Vernon Wilson of 
Fruitland; seven grandchildren, eight nieces and eleven nephews.
 
He was born March 10, 1879 in the Russian Crimea and had been a member of the 
Lutheran church.
 
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 tomorrow afternoon at the Emmanuel 
Lutheran church in New Plymouth with the Rev. Theo Brackman officiating.  
Interment follows at the Park View cemetery in New Plymouth under the 
direction of the Shaffer Memory chapel.
