J. (Ben) Leonard, 61, U. P. railroad agent there for eight years had passed away in his sleep some time Thursday night. He had not been feeling well for some time and had come to see a physician in Payette Thursday night, who advised that he take a two months lay-off. He went home and caught up on some office details, so he could begin the lay-off either Friday or Saturday, and then went to bed. Mrs. Leonard found him dead in bed when she went to awaken him Friday morning, he evidently having passed on quietly in his sleep some time during the night. Benjamin Jerrod Leonard was born at Greenville, Ohio, June 19, 1887. He served in the navy during the first World War and had been employed by the railroad as a telegrapher and agent for thirty years. He came to Fruitland eight years ago from Weiser. He was a member of the Payette American Legion Post; the Kuna Masonic lodge; the First Church of Christ Science of Payette; the Union Pacific ORT; and the U. P. Old Timers club. His hobby was bird and trap shooting and he was particularly well known among members of the Payette County Rod & Gun club, not only for his shooting ability but also for his sportsmanship. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Cecilia Leonard, Fruitland; two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy J. Ainswowrth, Fruitland, and Mrs. Barbara B. Wartena, Boise; two sons, Robert of Denver and Dr. W. L. of Wilmington, Del.; four sisters, two brothers and three grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Shaffer Chapel with Mrs. Alta Coughanour of the First Church of Christ Scientist officiating. Interment was in Morris Hill cemetery at Boise with the Payette Masonic lodge giving its ritualistic service at the graveside.
