Mr. Mathews was born at Richview, Illinois on November 20, 1874 and passed away in Payette, Tuesday, February 25, 1936. He was united in marriage to Miss Hannah Burns, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Burns, at Neosho, Mo., March 17, 1917. Mr. Mathews was very well known here, having made his home in Payette since 1930 and prior to that time had visited this community every fall for more than twenty years, while engaging in the produce brokerage business. At the time of his death he was operating the Barry Service Station on the Oregon Side. Besides his widow, he leaves to mourn his passing, three sisters, Mrs. Oscar Tate of Ashley, Ill., Mrs. Lon Mangum, Johnson City, Ill., Mrs. Burt Hill, Corbondale, Ill., and three brothers, John and Robert, both of St. Louis, and James of Los Angeles. On Monday evening the body was shipped to Tiffs City, Mo., for burial accompanied by Mrs. Mathews and her sister, Mrs. Grover Warren, who came last week from Tiffs City.
