RITES SET FOR FALLEN SOLDIER

Remains of Pvt. L. M. Nelson, New Plymouth, Will Arrive May 5

Notification has been received here that the remains of Pvt. Luther Merle 
Nelson of New Plymouth, who lost his life overseas in World War 11, will arrive 
here May 5.

The letter from the Headquarters Sixth Army Escort Detachment, Ogden, Utah 
stated:
Gentlemen:

This is to advise you that the remains of Pvt. Luther Merle Nelson, recently 
returned from overseas under the Repatriation of World War 11 Dead Program, 
will arrive on May 5, 1948 accompanied by Sgt. James A. Duniho, Sixth Army 
Escort Detachment from the Utah, General Distribution Depot, Ogden, Utah.

The remains will be delivered to Landon-Shaffer Funeral Home, who is 
representing the next-of-kin, Mrs. Luther M. Nelson, New Plymouth, Idaho in 
setting up the funeral arrangements.  

If it is the desire of the next-of-kin to have Military Graveside Honors, the 
Mortician will supply you with the name of the Veterans’ Organization that has 
been designated to perform Graveside Honors and the Commander of the 
Organization selected will have the information as to the members who will act 
as color bearers, color guard, firing squad and the Officers participating.

Pvt. Luther Merle Nelson was born in Oklahoma January 2, 1917 and came to New 
Plymouth December 2, 1939, where he lived until he entered the service in 
1944.  He served with the 5th Marines and was at Iwo Jima when he was killed 
February 19, 1945. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Muriel E. Nelson, one 
daughter, Wanda, and two sons, Stanley and Donald, all of New Plymouth, his 
father Luther G. Nelson of Payette, two brothers, William of New Plymouth and 
Van of Genoa, Colo., one sister, Audrey Gilchrist of Woodrow, Colo.  The 
remains are scheduled to arrive here May 5.  Services are being arranged by the 
Landon-Shaffer.
