John Franklin Nesbitt John Franklin Nesbitt was born in East Waterbury, Vermont, February 4, 1851, and passed away at his home near New Plymouth, September 27, 1935, at the age of 84 years, 7 months and 23 days. Funeral services were held at two o'clock Sunday afternoon from Peterson's Funeral Parlor, at which time J. C. Stewart, an old friend of Mr. Nesbitt, spoke on the life of this well known pioneer. Interment was in the Riverside Cemetery conducted by the Odd Fellows lodge. Mr. Nesbitt was the son of John F. and Janet Taylor Nesbitt. He attended the grade schools of his home community. When fifteen years old he went to Mapleton, Kansas, with his brother, where he lived for seven years. In the spring of 1874 he came to Idaho, working on a ranch near Mountain Home for two years. From 1876 to 1880 he engaged in freighting between Kelton, Utah and Idaho City. 55 years ago or in 1880, Mr. Nesbitt purchased a squatter's right to one hundred and sixty acres of land on the Payette River, where he made his home until his death. Since taking up his residence on the Payette river he has been actively engaged in farming, stock raising and banking. From 1902 to 1904 he served as County Commissioner of Canyon County. In August, 1882, he was married to Mary Jane Stuart. To this union were born seven children: John W. of Mackey, Idaho, George F. of Payette, Milton S. of New Plymouth, Oscar, who died in infancy, Elmer H. of Emmett, Iva M. of New Plymouth and Clarence S. of Weiser. Seventeen grandchildren also survive. He was a member of the I. O. O. F. Lodge, being initiated January 16, 1889, at the age of 37 years. He received the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Degrees on March 6, 1889, and received the 25 years Veteran Jewell on April 26, 1917. At the time of his death he had been a member of the lodge for 46 years. Mr. Nesbitt passed away at his old home after several weeks' illness.
