Pence. Peter Pence of this city received the sad news last Saturday of the death of his sister, Miss Sarah E. Pence, in Pittsburg, Pa. Miss Pence was known to a number of Payette people, who will learn of her death with deep regret, having spent some time visiting at the home of Mr. Pence a number of months ago. Mr. Pence took his departure Saturday night for Pittsburg expecting to reach that city in time to attend the funeral of his sister. The Pittsburg Times of May 20 gives the following account of Miss Pence’s death: Miss Sarah E. Pence, widely known in Pittsburg religious, philanthropic and business circles, died last night at Mercy hospital. Miss Pence was one of the most active members of the Central Young Women’s Christian association, of Pittsburg and Allegheny, of which she had been president for several terms. She was a sustaining member of the association and, in addition to serving as president, was chairman of the executive and finance committees. She was an ardent advocate of the project for the erection of a new home for the association, and did much individual work toward raising a fund for that purpose, speaking at meetings of business men and visiting them personally in behalf of the work. Miss Pence was an almost daily visitor to the association rooms on Fifth street, and was very popular with the members at large, as well as with the other officers and members of committees. Miss Pence was about 55 years of age. She had been at the hospital since May 13, and had undergone an operation. She was a member of the dressmaking firm of Pence & Irwin, 437 Penn avenue, and made her home there.
