J. Rowse of this city received the sad news by letter yesterday morning from Independence, Iowa, that his brother, H. F. Rowse, well known in Payette, had been instantly killed on Monday afternoon as the result of being struck by a train. The unfortunate man, who was almost entirely deaf, had gone out hunting and was walking along the track when the train, a fast express, came upon him. The whistle was blown but Mr. Rowse, not hearing it and apparently unconscious that danger was near, made no effort to get out of the way. The engineer, it is stated, made no effort to stop the train, taking it for granted that the deceased had heard the whistle and would step to one side in time. The deceased had gone back to Iowa from Payette only last week to spend the winter, arriving there Friday. He had resided here a little over a year and owned considerable property in the city.
