F. SHERWOOD FAILS TO RALLY FROM MAJOR OPERATION, FUNERAL HELD HERE TUESDAY AFTERNOON W.F. Sherwood who was taken to the Holy Rosary hospital at Ontario some time ago, where he later underwent an operation of a very serious nature for stomach trouble, passed away late Saturday evening, July 27. Thus another of Payette's best citizens has been called away. Mr. Sherwood was among the first who came to the Payette valley to withstand the hardships of those pioneer days in making homes on the vast deserts of Idaho. He was one of those rugged pioneers who stood ready with a helping hand to do his full share in what ever there was to be done for the betterment of the community in which he lived, which made for him many dear friends who were greatly grieved to learn of his passing. He was born at West Concord, Minn., August 11, 1869, and came to Boise in 1890 and later came to Payette valley, where he homesteaded land near where the town of Fruitland now stands, and built the first homestead shanty on the New Plymouth and Fruitland bench. He took an active part in building and establishing the Irrigation canals and developing that section of the Payette valley for a number of years, and in 1903 started in the manufacturing of brick which enterprise he continued very successfully until the time of his death. Mr. Sherwood served eight years on the school board of Independent District No. 32, where he rendered valuable service to the people of the district. He was also elected on the city council where he served for six years rendering efficient service in many ways to the city of Payette. He was a charter member of the I.O.O.F. lodge of Payette, a member of Washoe Lodge No. 28 A. F. AND A. M. Knight Templars and Shriners, and also a member of the Modern Woodman. Mr. Sherwood was always very prominent in community affairs and stood ready to do his full part in any way where help was needed. He was good hearted, a good neighbor, a kind father and husband, a man what will be greatly missed in this community. Besides his wife he is survived by one daughter Inez, four sons, Clark of Pensacola, Fla., Clarence of Seattle, Kenneth and Cecil of Payette. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock in charge of D. T. Sleep of the Christian Science church, with services at the grave by the Masonic lodge. The Odd Fellows also attended in a body. During the services all business houses remained closed. CARD OF THANKS We wish to express the gratitude we feel for the sincere expressions of kindness and sympathy shown by our many friends in the loss of our loved husband and father William F. Sherwood.
