The Spaulding family was associated with the hardware business in Payette for 57 years. Vern Spaulding's father, L. W. Spaulding and M. E. Wood established the first hardware store in Payette in 1902. Vern went into business with his father in 1925 after the death of M. E. Wood. When the senior Spaulding died in 1942, Vern Spaulding continued the business until it was closed out in 1959. The business was located in a building which was torn down to make room for the new bank building. He was born January 23, 1893, at West Moreland, Kan., and came from Manhattan, Kan., to Payette in 1901. Mr. Spaulding married Marion Barnes in Boise on April 25, 1920. He was a veteran of World War I, a member of the American Legion, Episcopal church, Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and El Korah Shrine. He is survived by his wife, two brothers, R. U. Spaulding, Blackfoot, and Loran, Salem, Ore., and one sister, Dr. Velma Spaulding, Stockton, Calif. Services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the St. James Episcopal church with the Rev. Fred Pickett officiating. Interment will be at Riverside cemetery under the direction of Shaffer's Chapel.
