Stegner, pioneer Fruitland resident, passed away at his home, Thursday morning at the age of 84 after a brief illness. Mr. Stegner had been affected by a heart condition for some time and had not been able to do heavy work, but was able to be up and around, his wife reported. Mr. Stegner built the first home in Fruitland, the one the couple lived in when he passed away. He was also the first postmaster in Fruitland, and was appointed in 1911. They closed the store in 1929, and he engaged in day work around Fruitland, and opened a shoe cobbler store which he ran for many years. Mr. Stegner was born January 21, 1869 in Sunman, Indiana, and was married to Jean C. Newell, December 29, 1898 at Custer, Minnesota, and came to Fruitland in 1902 from Minnesota. He was a member of the Methodist Church in Minnesota. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Jean Stenger; two sons, Carl Stegner of Delano, California, and LeRoy Stegner of Fossil, Oregon; one daughter, Opal McBride of the Oregon Slope, eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
