He was born the only son of Vernon and Florence Swartwood at Clay Center, Kans. He was raised and educated in Fruitland. He served in the United States Navy during WWII and received numerous awards and citations. He made the Navy his career, retiring after more than 30 years of service. He made his home on Whidby Island, Wash. where he was a businessman and rancher retaining a second home and business at Fruitland. He is survived by his wife, Lavina; two sons, Jim of Bremerton, Wash., and Richard of Alexandria, Va; his mother, Florence Swartwood of New Plymouth; five sisters, Oma Rogers and Connie Scanlan of Boise, Dorothy Naylor of Parma, Evelyn Griffiths of Fruitland, and Gwen House of Vacaville, Calif., five grandchildren. The family suggests memorials he made to the ALS Society of America, P.O. Box 5951, Sherman Oaks, Calif., 91403, in his name.
