In Memoriam

In sadness we chronicle this week the passing of the owner and editor of the 
Enterprise. While he had the full length of days allotted by the Psalmist as 
the life of man, yet the span of life seems short. And while we deplore the 
loss and will feel for a long time the lonesomeness suggested by his vacant 
chair, we will sense his comradeship and long remember the many good days made 
better because of his presence and advice.

Will Wells was born May 27, 1864, at Clinton, Ill. Moved later to Odebolt, 
Iowa, from there to Schaller, Iowa, 1890, and to Payette in 1900, where he has 
since lived. The funeral was held at the Landon parlors Tuesday of this week at 
2:30, and was conducted according to the rites of the Christian Science Church, 
by D. T. Sleep, First Reader of the Payette Church.

He became interested in the Enterprise in 1908 and assumed active management in 
1917. He was for a time engaged in the real estate business with A. E. Wood, 
who passed away a number of years ago. Mr. Wells and W. P. Ackerman of New 
Plymouth were partners in the fruit and produce shipping business for a number 
of years. He was at one time engaged in real estate and coal business with Wm. 
Maule, who is yet an active citizen of Payette. He developed and owned one of 
the good orchards of the valley which is known for the fine quality of Rome 
Beauty apples. Active in civic activities and politics. A considerable number 
of years ago he was elected justice of the peace and has continuously held the 
office since, his services in this capacity being so satisfactory that he was 
re-elected continuously. 

Mr. Wells also has served for a considerable time as police judge of Payette.

He made many friends as a newspaper editor and publisher. It was never his 
policy to print hateful, critical things about his fellow man. He deplored 
human weakness and short comings, and dealt in mercy with others. The passing 
of Will Wells takes from our civic and social life one who has long been an 
active member and worker for the betterment of our city and community. 

Upon the new made grave of our friend, the communities friend, we lay a wreath 
of kind remembrance. 

Notwithstanding a constant down pour of rain a large gathering of people were 
in attendance at the service. The floral gifts were exceedingly profuse and 
beautiful.
