Zutze Well Known Resident of Washoe Found Dead by the Side of Short Line Tracks Near Washoe School House Saturday Morning-Death Probably Due to Excessive Drinking and Exposure. Henry L. Zutze a well known resident of Washoe and the owner of considerable property in Washoe, on the Fruitland bench and in Ontario, was found dead Saturday morning lying just beneath the small culvert on the Oregon Short Line opposite the Washoe school house. The body was first discovered by Carroll Lawrence and some other companions who were going to the bench to pick some apples and were walking along the railroad track. About nine thirty when crossing the culvert they noticed a man lying as though asleep just beneath the culvert. Supposing him to be in a drunken stupor the boys went on about their business. A couple of hours later when returning they still found him there and at once concluded that he was either sick or dead. Neighbors in Washoe were notified and investigation proved that the man was dead and had been for some six or seven hours. Constable J. B. Cosman was notified and with Judge R. L. Shaw and Drs. Woodward and Woodward at once went to the scene. The man was found lying with his head pillowed on his left arm as though asleep. Though several Washoe neighbors were there they failed to recognize him due no doubt to the fact that he had recently shaved off a heavy black mustache. Not much examination was made as it was decided to do nothing but move the body to town until the coroner arrived. There was found in the pockets of the clothing eighty-five cents in money and three beer checks on the Boise Buffet. The body was brought to town by the officers and taken to J. A. Lauer & Brother's undertaking parlors to await the coroner who was notified by telephone. Shortly before the coroner arrived J. A. Lauer viewing the remains identified them as those of Henry L. Zutze and the wife who lives in Washoe was communicated with and asked to come in. Shortly after the arrival of the coroner Mrs. Zutze arrived and indentified the body as that of her husband. At the inquest held she stated that he had left home Friday noon stating he would walk to Ontario to see a man regarding the renting of a place he owned on the bench and that was the last she has seen or heard of him. She also stated that he was a heavy drinking man and had been drinking for a few days. The coroner's jury came to a finding that Zutze met his death from unknown causes. No marks of violence were found on the body and the general impression is that the man had started drinking heavily started to walk home and getting sleepy simply lay down and died form exposure. The remains were taken to Vale Sunday by the wife and interred in the cemetery there.
