The photographer is unknown, but he took many pictures of Payette while visiting. After his death, his family sent the photos to the Payette County Historical Society. Additional Comments: In 1908, William A. Coughanour, Mayor, presented a 9 foot bronze statue of an elk to the town of Payette. For many years it sat in front of the Payette Train Depot, mounted in a fountain where travelers watered their horses. In the 1940's, it was moved to Central Park, where it was severely vandalized in the 1960's by Halloween pranksters. In 1981, the elk underwent a complete restoration and was then placed in front of City Hall, where it resides today.
