W. I “Doughboy” Statue The statue, made by E.M. Viquesney, was made to honor veterans of World War I. The “Spirit of The American Doughboy” was placed in 135-140 locations around the United States during the period from 1921-1941. The statue was first placed at the center of 8th Street and Center Avenue. It was officially presented to Payette on Memorial Day, May 30, 1923. L.V. Patch gave the “Doughboy” to the City of Payette. It was dedicated by Idaho Senator William Borah. It was moved to stand by the flag at the end of Main Street on Feb. 27, 1981 and called “Freedom Won Park” The flagpole was erected on May 13, 1978 and dedicated by Sen. James McClure and Mayor Dick Butcher. Governor John Evans dedicated “Freedom Won Park”. Project coordinator was Michael Dalton. Sponsors of the project were the Payette Civic League; 129th Engineer Co., Idaho National Guard and Nancy Jacobsen.
