McConnel, dies Instantly from Blow by Windlass at Milner Reservoir Harlan B. McConnel, 54, assistant superintendent at Milner Dam for the last year and a half, was instantly killed early yesterday when the handle of a windlass with which he was lowering a headgate at the intake of the North Side Canal Company's main canal slipped from his grasp and crushed his skull. The body was discovered about 10:30 A.M. by a North Side ditchrider. It was found in a sitting position against the rail of the bridge over the intake to the canal. Life apparently had been for some time. Both hands were mutilated as though they had been caught in the gears of the lowering device. The windlass handle that was L-shaped was bent almost straight from by the force of the impact upon Mr. McConnel's skull. Coroner Investigates The body, following investigation made by Dr. John F. Schmershall, Jerome coroner, was brought to the Grossman funeral parlors here. Mr. McConnel had been employed as assistant to his brother, W. N. McConnel, superintendent at Milner Dam for more than 10 years and lived with his wife and daughter in the superintendent's residence at the dam. During the absence of his brother, W. N. McConnel, on a vacation trip to Boise, Harlan B. McConnel had been in charge of the dam, and was acting in that capacity when his life was snuffed out yesterday. Another brother, Charles E. McConnel, has been an employee for many years of Twin Falls street and waterworks department, and a third brother resides in Nampa. Mrs. Smith, Twin Falls, is a sister. Additional Comments: Harlan B.
