All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/id/idfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Chris Storey chrissy_7@q.com October 12, 2009, 9:52 pm Twin Falls News July 14, 1905 Shoots himself through the head with a rifle and dies instantly-mind supposed to have been unbalanced by dissipation. _______________________ Without giving a hint of his intention or a shred of reason for his action, George Johnson, the proprietor of a small restaurant on Twelfth avenue, behind the Jones building, shot himself through the head with a rifle on Thursday evening and died instantly, L.B.Hale and the wife of the suicide were eyewitnesses of the tragedy. Hale and johnson were sitting in a room conversing. Johnson appeared to be in loe spirits. He wrote a letter to his mother and read it to Hale. Picking up his rifle, which stood against the wall near by, Johnson remarked that it was a good weapon. Before his intent could be detected, he placed the muzzel of the weapn beneath his right ear and pulled the trigger. The bullet passed through his head, coming out above and behind the left ear. Death was instantaneous. Mrs Johnson stepped into an adjoing room to put the children to bed just as her husband grasped the rifle.. She heared the shot and rushed into the room where her husband was in time to see him topple over. Constable Hazen and Marshal Walters were on the scene in a few moments, but their services were not required. The body was removed to Havlicek's undertaking parlors and Mrs. Johnson and the children were kindly cared for by Mr. Bessire. Dr. Patterson was notified and an inquest was held on Friday morning, a verdict of suicide being rendered. The body was held pending the arrival of Johnson's mother from La Belle, Idaho. Johnson was 35 years of age. He came to Twin Falls from Lorenzo, Fremont County, some monthe ago and opened a saloon but did not prosoer. Recently he had been conducting a small restaurant, It is said that while he was the proprietor of a saloon in Fremont County he shot and killed a man and the occurrence preyed upon his mind. Of late Johnson had been dissipating and in his crapulent moments he was very much depressed. Additional Comments: It seem's in the early 1900's suicide happened often.
