He crossed the plains by ox team in 1848, and settled in Linn County,Oregon, near Where Alany now stands. He again returned to Linn County and engaged in farming until 1889,when he removed to Idaho, and settled in Council Valley, where he lived up to the time of his death. He was twice married, and had eight children, five of whom survive him.Uncle Jim, as he was familiarly called, was one of God's noblemen; he was a good citizen and a kind neighbor. He was a rugged type of manhood, and although he had passed his threescore and ten, he was still hale and hearty. Only a few days prior to his passing away he was in Council and seemingly in usual health. The immdeiate cause of his death was heart disease.
