RESOURCES, DESCRIPTIONS AND EXPLANATORY INFORMATION Included in this archival material is a master surname index (of all burials), of individuals buried in the eight major cemeteries of Valley county as well as those identifiable burials which have taken place in other locations in the Valley County area. This index provides a means of establishing whether a particular person has been identified from tombstones, funeral home information or other historical infor- mation, as having been buried in Valley County and the particular location in which this took place. Available information on dates of birth and death has been included. The source documents (noted below) may include additional information on relationships, place of birth (in a few instances), place of death (if other than an general cemetery location), etc., which are not included in this report. Be aware that these Indexes are not exhaustive. A number of tombstones, over the years, became unidentifiable or illegible due to weathering and neglect. Some earlier burials (Roseberry, for example) were located in an earlier, abandoned, cemetery, and no information has been found to identify those who were buried there. Prior to the advent of cemeteries, some families buried members on their property. Others were buried in remote areas, because of isolation, at the time of death. Many of these have been identified, others undoubtedly remain unknown. This would be particularly true for the early gold-rush years starting in 1862. Where differences exist, among the various sources, the earlier record generally has been considered to be the more reliable, except where more detailed information was given in a later source.
