This compilation has been extracted from a microfilm copy of the 1920 Census for Valley County, Idaho, which is available from the Salt Lake Family History Library as Microfilm 1820294 (vol. 15). The original record is located in the Valley County Court House. Special thanks are given to Gene and Linda Brock, Roz Campbell, Eilene Evans, Beverly Swanson, and Bea Snyder for their considerable personal effort in the laborious task of extracting the data from the often difficult-to-read microfilm copies; and to Bea Snyder for her expert oversight of the extraction process. All of these efforts were of a volunteer nature and reflect favorably on community spirit in Valley County. For those interested in using this Index for genealogical or family history purposes the following might be considered: 1. This Index is useful for establishing whether or not a particular individual was living in Valley County in 1920. 2. States or countries of birth of individuals are provided as well as dates of immigration and naturalization. 3. The particular location (precincts and villages) of each person in the county is noted. 4. Personal information (age, marital status, gender, occupation, attending school, ownership of property, relationship to head of household) is included. 5. The census page from which the information was secured is identified. 6. If a province was noted within a country (as place of birth), this is included, rather than the name of the country (e.g. New Brunswick). What is NOT included: 1. Because this list was alphabetized by surname and given name, many of the family relation- ships (to head of family) cannot be discerned from this listing. The reader should refer to the original census for that information. (pagenumbers provided will be useful for that purpose). 2. By indexing other valuable information is excluded; such as being able to identify neighbors or other families living in the same neighborhood or near vicinity. Again, reviewing infor- mation in the Census record itself would be recommended for such purposes. 3. There are a number of subject areas included in the original census which (because of space) were not included in this index, such as language spoken, literacy, etc. "Color" was not included as a category because few individuals were thus identified. Only two Japanese were identified as other than "white". No Indians or Blacks (Negroes) were cited in the census records for the county. Be aware that census records often contain errors. One source of error can be the ignorance of the person providing the information to the census taker regarding birth years, locations, etc. Another can be a deliberate misstating of information. For example, in order to avoid legal complications an informant might claim they were born in one location when actually they were born in another. This can be particularly true regarding immigrants who never took out naturalization papers. Other reasons include the census taker not clearly understanding the oral information being received from the informant, and misspelling names, places, etc. This often happens when the informant is a native of a non-English speaking country. Also, because the information is written in cursive, errors of interpretation can occur by the extractor and there can be errors of transcription by the typist. Every effort has been made to avoid these latter errors, but some will undoubtedly slip through. Where names/letters were illegible, ( _ _ _ _) were provided to so indicate. In spite of these limitations the authors anticipate that this Index will prove to be useful and are pleased to make it available to the interested researcher.
