Keating passed away on October 7, 2005 in El Paso. He was born on August 18, 1922 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, The son of James C. and Elsie Keating, Jim graduated with honors from the University Of Wisconsin at Madison in 1944, with a degree in chemical engineering. He belonged to Theta Delta Chi. At graduation he was hired by Standard Oil of California, now Chevron Corportation. Shortly thereafter, he served in the Navy, Lt, (J G) as a gunnery officer aboard the destroyer US Dunlap in the Pacific. The ship took the surrender of the Bonin Islands from the Japanese At the end of World War II. Returning to Chevron his career lasted over 43 Years at the Richmond, Calif. Refinery and he came to El Paso in 1972 as Refinery Manager. He finished his career as General Manager of Chevon's Refinery in Philadephia. He retired in 1987 and he and his wife returned to El Paso. Jim served on the El Paso Symphony Board, the Board of the United Way, the Junior Achievement Board as well as being a member of the Downtown Rotary Club, the Downtown Lions Club and was on the First Advisory Committee of the Assistance League of El Paso. His wife and best friend, Janie, whom he married on 1945, survives him. They would have celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary in December. He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved son, Mark, in 1975 while working for the forest service in Idaho. He always felt his greatest Achievement was building a log cabin with the help of his wife and son along the banks of the Salmon River in the back country of Idaho where the three of them enjoyed fishing, hiking, backpacking, and the wonderful friends in the little Hamlet of Yellow Pine. There will be a Memorial Service at 2 pm on Wednesday October 12, 2005 at the Sunset Funeral Home-West 480 N. Resler Drive. Interment will be next to his son in Yellow Pine, Idaho at a later date.
