ABERNATHY MEETS SUDDEN DEATH Is Thrown From Buggy While Taking School Census. Grandpa Wells Passes Away Without Previous Illness That in the midst of life we are in death was never more forcefully illustrated than in the sudden taking off of Mrs. Abernathy. Last Tuesday morning she hitched up the single rig which she is accustomed to drive and started out to take the school census of her district. Just what happened to cause the horse to runaway will never be known. All that is known of the accident is that at about 1 p.m. Baker's folks saw the horse coming down toward their place on the run and Mrs. Abernathy trying to control him. When he turned the corner she was thrown from the buggy onto some rocks. The ladies rushed to the scene but Mrs. Abernathy became unconscious just as they arrived. A team was hastily secured and she was taken to her home and a doctor summoned but she never regained consciousness and passed away at 7 o'clock. She was so badly mangled by the fall that death was inevitable. The funeral services were held at the family residence at 3 p. m. yesterday and interment was made in the Salubria cemetery, under the auspices of the Modern Woodmen and Royal neighbors, of which latter organization she was a member. Mrs. Abernathy was aged 57 years, 4 months and 20 days. She leaves a husband and three children to mourn her untimely demise. The children are Roy and Eddie and Mrs. Harry Smith. The Abernathys were among the first settlers in the Salubria valley. They have literally grown with the country and have done their full share in converting the valley in the garden spot that it is. Mrs. Abernathy will be missed by her large circle of friends. She has ever been prominent in the social life of her community, in lodge work and in educational work, and in the service of the latter she lost her life. As a neighbor and host Mrs. Abernathy had the esteem of all who had the good fortune to know her. In the departure of Mrs. Abernathy the community in which she lived has sustained a great loss. On all sides are heard expressions of sympathy for the bereaved husband and family, to whom, of course, the blow falls heaviest. Nathaniel O. Wells Most everybody in this vicinity knew Grandpa Wells, but very few knew him intimately or really understood the depth of intellect of the old man, as he was a man who attended to his own affairs and never meddled with others, so when the announcement came that Grandpa Wells was dead it did not produce the shock to the community that the tragic death of Mrs. Abernathy did. Mr. Wells, who was making his home at the time with his son, N. H. Wells, passed away last Monday afternoon at 7 p. m. He had been as well as usual and was able to walk around up to the day of his death. A short time before his death a member of the Wells family went to his room and asked him if he was feeling all right, and he replied that he was, but felt sleepy. When a short time afterward his room was visited he was asleep from which no one awakes. The funeral was held at the M.E. church in Cambridge and interment in the Cambridge cemetery, conducted by Rev. Moon. Nathaniel Otis Wells was born in Pennsylvania and was 94 years old. The old man was a constant reader and a deep thinker. His occasional visits to the News office for the exchange of ideas and likewise of reading material were always appreciated. Many of the editorials in the News in the past were inspired by some thought advanced by the aged caller. Perhaps no one outside of his family will miss him more than the News editor.
