About 7 p. m. Sunday evening W. P. Clayton who resides about three and one-half miles from Midvale committed suicide. The rash act was committed with a 22 caliber rifle, the bullet entering the side of his head. He lived about five hours after the commission of the act, never regaining consciousness. Clayton was 43 years of age. He left a wife, two step sons and two daughters. He moved from the vicinity of Weiser to Midvale about three years ago. For some time past he has been despondent and has threatened several times to commit suicide. It is stated he took a dose of strychnine sometime since but it is supposed he took too large a dose and it simply made him sick. He had been local agent for the P. & I. N. railroad resigning the position two weeks ago. The cause of the suicide is supposed to have been on account of trouble between himself and wife over property. Clayton was alone in a room at his home when he fired the fatal shot. His wife heard the report of the gun and rushed into the room and found him lying on the floor. She summoned a physician but he could do no good and he died about midnight. Coroner Bowen, of this city was summoned and went to Midvale Monday morning, impaneled a jury and held an inquest over the remains. The jury returned a verdict of death by his own hands.
