Mr. Cuddy had been gradually failing in health for some time, and a few months ago he took a trip to the coast in the hope that a change of climate would be beneficial to birth. He returned home about two months ago apparently no better for the change, and for the past month he has been confined to his bed most of the time. During the last two weeks, however, he appeared to be much improved in health and his death yesterday was a surprise to everybody. Mr. Cuddy was an old settler in Washington county, and was known as the "Wheelhorse," in fact, for years it seemed that nothing could take place in and around Salubria without the approval of John Cuddy. He was the leader and mainstay in all moves for betterment of the condition of affairs in the county, and always took an active interest in all public enterprises. Having lived in Salubria for the last 30 years and endured the hardships of pioneer life; he grew up with the country, or rather caused the country to grow up with him. He was prominent in politics, being a staunch republican all his life. Although not an office seeker, he was a political leader in the county, and what he said generally went in the republican party of this county. Mr. Cuddy was born in Ireland, county of Tipperary, Nov. 15th, 1834. With his parents he came to Massachusetts when 10 years old, and moved to California in 1849, during the gold excitement; after which he took up his residence in Washington when it was a territory, and where he was engaged in the lumber business for 15 years. He moved to Boise, this state, where he was in business five years, and came to Salubria in 1869, where he has since been engaged in mercantile and milling business. He was married to Miss Delia Tyne at Weiser Mills Nov. 10th, 1871. Mr. Cuddy would, on the 15th of the present month, have been 65 years old. In his death the community loses a valuable and esteemed citizen, and the family a careful and devoted husband and father. He leaves a wife, two sons and three daughters. The funeral will take place from the family residence in Salubria, (the Levi Allen residence) today (Friday) at 2 p. m.
