She was shot through the shoulder and thigh with a 30-30 rifle by the little 5-year old son of Fred Anderson. The bullet severed an artery and she bled to death before surgical assistance could reach her. The circumstances surrounding the tragedy are, as well as the event itself, especially sad. Mrs. Harlan was visiting at the home of Mrs. Fred Anderson, but Mrs. Anderson had gone to Boise to take Hallie Lichliter to the hospital. Mrs. Lichliter was staying at the Anderson home during Mrs. Anderson's absence. Just previous to the accident the little 5-year old son of Fred Anderson had gone up stairs and found their rifle and had also discovered the cartridges, which had been hidden as a precaution. He managed to get one of the cartridges into the gun and poked it down through a stovepipe hole in the ceiling and said: "Look out down there; I'm going to shoot!" He was told to put the gun up and had apparently started to obey. Mrs. Lichliter then started up the stairs to take the gun from him, but in the mean time he put the muzzle back through the stove pipe hole and fired, with the above result. The boy, of course, did not, realize what he had done. As soon as the fatal result of the accident was realized, Fred telephoned to his wife, who took the next train out of Boise and was met in Weiser by Fred, who had gone there with his auto. Mrs. Harland was born in Ohio and was 78 years and 28 days old. She was a pioneer in this country; her husband, Mike Harlan, who preceded her in death about fifteen years, taught school and practiced law in this country in the early days. She and Juddy Starr's mother were sisters, and she was aunt to Mrs. E. Lichliter. She had one brother, R. M. Harris at Alton, Mo. The funeral was Wednesday afternoon and internment in the Salubria cemetery beside her husband.
