Mr. Harris's was an eventful career, living in Ohio until he was 21, he moved to Freeport, Ill., and from there to Boone County, Iowa where he answered his country's call in 1860, remaining with the Stars and Stripes until Lee surrendered to the Northern Army. He was First Corporal in the Civil War and afterward Steward of the Salina Hospital in (unreadable). He was married to Eliza Dixon in 1857 and 9 children were born to them. Those living are Mrs. Elva Leichliter of Indian Valley, Mrs. Nellie Patrick of Seattle, William and John of Boone, Iowa, Henry and Judson of Alton, Mo. and Charles of Okla. The last three years of his long life was spent peacefully with his granddaughter, Mrs. Fred Anderson of Indian Valley. He was a member of the Christian church for 67 years. The remains were laid to rest in the Salubria Cemetery, Rev. McDonald officiating, where we hope the country's colors will fly over his grave each Decoration Day for the next hundred years.
