CHAS E. SCHMITZ PASSES It was not only a shock to the immediate family, but to the entire community and surrounding territory when it was learned that Dr. C. E. Schmitz had answered the last call, Tuesday afternoon February 23, 1920. But just past 40 years of age, Dr. Schmitz was age-old in experience and practice and was counted one of the best physicians in the west. It can be truthfully said of him; that he was better to others than to himself. Charles Ernest Schmitz was born in Mapleton, Kan. Oct. 22, 1879. He graduated from the Barnes Medical College of St. Louis in 1903, coming directly to Ida. and locating at Cambridge. In 1904 he was married to Miss Myrtle McClain, and in 1908 took a post- graduate course in Germany and in Chicago. Four children were born to Dr. Schmitz and his wife, three of whom are living. They are: Ernest, 15; Lawrence 13; Orville, 8; Genevieve died in infancy. Besides his wife and children he leaves a sister, Mrs. J. C. Allen of Cambridge, a brother Dr. F. A. Schmitz, a physician of Midvale and one brother, four sisters and his mother in the East. The direct cause of his death was double lobar pneumonia, no doubt contracted by exposure on the many trips taken in the past few weeks to alleviate the suffering of others. Drs. F. A. Schmitz and R. T. Whiteman as well as a trained nurse, Miss Shaw, were with him almost constantly the last four days of his illness. Dr. Schmitz was a member in good standing in the Modern Woodman and the Woodmen of the World. He was a member of the Catholic church and the last said rites were performed by Father Nolan of this parish, assisted by Father Godschalx. The funeral which was attended by people from all over the community was held from the Catholic church, Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 10:30 A. M. and interment was in the Cambridge cemetery beside his little girl as was his wish. CARD OF THANKS We wish to thank the people of Cambridge and vicinity for their help, sympathy and floral offerings at the last rites of our husband, father and brother. Mrs. Myrtle M.
