W. Smith about two years previous to her death. She was the daughter of John and Permelia Sutton, born in Washington Co., Pa., Feb. 25, 1835, was united in marriage to Finley M. Smith, Dec. 25, 1856 at Cardington, Ohio. Unto this union were born five children, Francis Marion, Isaac Ross, Clare Luella, Nettie Bell and Chas. H. Their early married life was happily spend until the great Civil war of 1861 to 65. Her husband being a wonderfully patriotic American, in Aug. 1861 enlisted as a soldier in Co H, 3rd. Ohio Cavalry. The young wife was left with two small children, the youngest a mere babe in her arms. She consented to his enlistment in the Great Cause that preserved to us our nation. What she endured in these dark days can only be told by those who tried to lend and extend comfort to the war widow on that day. The writer, only a lad of 9 years at that time, clearly recalls the days of waiting and sorrow which filled the entire country. At the close of the war her husband was returned to her but greatly broken down in health. Much of the time, for years, he was hardly able to perform hard labor and the bad effects lasted until the day of his death. They emigrated to Kansas in the fall of 1866 becoming pioneers in then, a wild prairie country. After living there 27 years with some success and also resources, they emigrated to Salubria where Mrs. Smith has been well and favorably known ever since, the patient living wife, mother and friend to all. After having a clear and distinct view of her life for a period of over 60 years, I can only say of her life, "Would to God I could live this ideal life as she." Ever ready to assist others and early choosing, as Mary of old, that good part, which shall never be taken away from her. Those in Idaho who have known her life here, certainly will say as much or more of her good life than I have said. L.W. SMITH Card of Thanks We, the children of Mrs. Permelia Smith, desire to sincerely thank those who ministered to us during the funeral of our mother. All are gratefully remembered.
