County, Illinois The following is a partial transcription of the 1864-65 City Directory for Cairo, Ill. which was obtained by me Janeth Hargis on our visit to the City of Cairo in 1994. It is not complete, but is of pages I had an interest in for my own family research therefore, the information is limited to only those pages. I have made every effort to transcribe the directory as it is written. I have highlighted individual names for the sole purpose of easy family research. I find this City Directory to be of great interest since it immediately follows the Civil War. Here you will notice many Widows listed. Since there isn't a Census immediately following the War, this makes for a true genealogy treasure. I have made every effort not to change the spelling, punctuations, abbreviations, etc. from the orginial. I have highlighted the names for easier lookups and italicized and underlined some information such as Railroad Companies, and Newspapers serving the area at that time. See my transcription of the "1868 History of Cairo and Alexander Co., Ill." for an explanation of the abbreviations used in the City Directory. This directory was published Annually by the "Cairo Democrat Company" in 1866 and priced at $2.00. CAIRO CITY DIRECTORY for 1866 pg. 60 CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, F. G. Chapman, sec'y, 75 Ohio Levee. The following information was obtained by me Janeth Hargis in the summer of 1994 while on a visit to the City of Cairo. At the time, I was researching some of my family therefore the information is limited to only what I obtained at that time. I have made every effort to transcribe the information as I found it in the directory. The names are listed, last name first with no comma's after the last name. I have placed a comma and highlighted names for easier look ups when doing genealogy work. The 1884-85 Cairo City Directory was published by Chas. O. Ebel & Co's and sold for $2.00. The only pages transcribed here are: pages 64, 65, 124, 125, 208, and 209. Should anyone have this or anyother Cairo Ciry Directory I have transcribed available and willing to let me use it, I will be more than happy to complete the transcription for this work.
