He was born in Springfield, Ohio June 8, 1827, but had not lived in in his native state since childhood. He has been a resident of Bond County since 1852, in which year his parents came to Mills Township, after a temporary residence in Alton and Highland. On January 20, 1859 he married Nancy Bunch of Mills township and Mrs. Jane Scott of Greenville. His wife died November 11, 1860 leaving no children. August 12, 1862 he enlisted in Co. E 130th Reg. Ill Infantry, the late U.B. Harris' Company. He served during the continuance of the war. He was at Memphis, Vicksburg and other places with his regiment and in the disasterous Red River expedition, was later taken prisoner by the Confederates at Mansfield, Louisiana, April 8, 1864 and for nearly fourteen months was imprisoned at Camp Ford, Tyler, Texas, being finally exchanged at the mouth of the Red River May 26, 1865. He was honorarbley discharged at Camp Butler, June 23, 1865. On August 17, 1865 he married Rebecca A. Green, daughater of William Green Of Mills Township and to this union was born seven children, Charles E. Adams of Springfield, Edward Adams of Taylorville, James F. Adams of Toledo, Ohio. Mrs. John H. Harlan and Mrs. John H. Smith, both of Mills Township and Mrs. Ulyssess S. Coigny of St. Louis. His companion of 44 years also survives. He also leaves two brothers, John Adams of Morton, Indiana and Harriosn Adams of Wichta, Kansas. the late Lemuel Adams of Greenville and Washington D.C. was a brother.
