Charles Carrillon, for 47 years a resident of Pleasant Mound and a former member of the Illinois Legislature, passed away at his home southwest of Smithboro, August 23, 1923. Charles Carrillon was born September 2, 189 in Hesse Darmstadt, Germany son of Francis and Eva Carrillon. At the age of 18 years he came to America, landing here July 3, 1857. After a few months spent in New York he came west and later embarked in the mercantile business at Alhambra where he remained until April 18, 1861 when he enlisted in Co. E. 1st Mo. Vol Inf. At the seige of Vicksburg he was wounded in the left leg and after his recovery was commissioned a frist lieutenant and served with hw rank at the Battle of Pea Ridge. In 1863 the disablitly caused by his wounds became serious and he was forced to resign his commission and was honorabley discharged. After the war he engaged in business in St. Louis. In 1874 he purchased 170 acres of land in Pleasant Mound Township. He was married in St. Louis September 27, 1862 to Miss Elizabeth Greiner, who with five sons and four daughters survives. The children are Edward of Highland, John W. of Pocahontas, Charles of Terre Haute, Indiana, Frank of East St. Louis, and Henry who resides at home. The daughters are Mrs. Lizzie Wolfmiller of Pleasant Mound Township, Mrs. Nancy Siggs of Keyesport, Mrs. Emma Stone of Pleasant Mound and Mrs Bertha Lurkins of Pleasant Mound Township. He is survived by one brother, Dr. Adam Carrillon of Weiheim, Germany and one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Yeager of St. Louis. Interment was at Maxey Cemetery.
