Dewey, for many years a resident of Mills township and later Greenville, died May 4, 1920 at the residence of Hon. and Mrs. Cicero J. Lindley in Greenville. Mr. and Mrs. Dewey had been making thier at the residence of Judge Lindley, who is springfield the greater part of the time. Theron Stevens Dewey was the son of Nelson and Lois (Scribner)Dewey, who came to Bond County from Vermont in 1837. He was the youngest of 12 children and was born on a farm in Mills Township, July 24, 1842. On March 17, 1869 he was married at Greenville to Nancy J. McNeill, a sister of the late Abraham McNeil. They resided on a farm until about 20 years ago they moved to Greenville. to this union were born 5 children, two daughters and three sons. On daughter Violet, died at the age of 2 years and Mildred, the wife of H. L. Demoulin, died about 11 years ago. The three sons, Edgar N. and Will J. of Greenville and Horace M. of Marshall with their mother survive. Mr. Dewey is the last of his family. Mr. Dewey enlisted as a private in Co. D. 3rd Ill. Vol. Calvary, which was organized in Greenville, August 12, 1861 by Captain T. M. Davis. This company was mustered out and re-organized August 25, 1864 at Memphis, Tennessee, the letter of the company changed to "E". After a year of Battling with Indians was mustered out at Fort Snelling, Minnesota, October 10, 1865. Mr. Dewey at the time Co. D was mustered out, re-enlisted in Co. E. and remained with the company until it was mustered out. During the battle of Pea Ridge on March 6, 7 and 8th, 1862 Mr. Dewey was wounded. He received a gunshot wound to his left heel, the bullet passing through the member and killing the horse upon which he was riding. His wound did not keep him in the hospital a great length of time and he soon rejoined his command. At this time he was First Sergeant of Co. D. He also participated in the Battle of Springfield, Miisour, Jackson and Vicksburg, Mississippi, Little Rock, Arkansas and Arkansas Post. Mr. Dewey served from August 12, 1861 until October 10, 1865.
