Louis Valentine Graff the son of Friedrich Graff and Louisa Philippina (Spies) Graff was born on January 27, 1877 in St. Jacob, Madison County, Illinois. He was baptized as Ludwig Valentin Graff but went by Louis Graff. Louis Graff's father Friedrich Graff was a wagon maker in St. Jacob, Illinois. After his father's death in 1895, Louis worked as a Farm Hand and Laborer for many different farms in St. Jacob Township. He played Base Drum for the St. Jacob Harmony Band in the late 1890s. He was known to many by the nickname "Dutch Doodle." Louis Graff never married. In the early 1930s, he and his brother William Graff made their home with a cousin Mamie Graff at her farm on Dudleyville Road in Bond County, Illinois. Louis and his brother William lived and worked as a Farm Laborers for their cousin Mamie Graff until her death in 1949. The two brothers then moved south of Greenville and continued to live together in their old age. Louis and his brother William made frequent visits St. Jacob, Illinois to visit their sister Ella Schiefer and extended family. Louis Graff sent many letters and postcards to his nephew Alan Schiefer who was a Private with the U.S. Army during World War II. Louis Graff passed away on March 28, 1951 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Highland, Illinois, following an illness of from asthma and heart complications. He had been a patient at the hospital for 10 days prior to his death. Louis was buried in Smith Grove Cemetery in Greenville, Illinois following services held at Dewey & Son Chapel, the Rev. A. D.
