Dr. Baxter Haynes was born in Barren County, Kentucky, Dec. 20, 1827 and was brought to Illinois by his parents when but two years of age. He was a veteran of two wars, the Mexican and the Civil War. He enlisted in Co. G. First Ill. Inft. for service in the Mexican War in Jun 1846 under Capt. W. J. Wyatt, in 1848 he crossed the plains with an ox team, but later returned to Morgan county. He married Susan Bull, Jan. 6. 1849 and to them were born five children. Dr. Moses Haynes of Bingham, Illinois, Jane, Anna, Elizabeth and William. His wife died March 3, 1863. Dr. Haynes was married a second time to Margaret J. Brown, Jan. 20, 1864 and four daughters and one son were born to them. One of these Effie May married Stephen Jett of Bond county. Jan. 15, 1862, Dr. Haynes enlisted and raised a company of 103 men, which became Co. E. 112 Ill Infantry. he served as a Captian a year and eight months. whe resigned because of the death of his wife. Later he located in Montgomery County. He settled on his present property in 1887. He had been engaged in the practice of medicine since 1867.
