Mrs. Keyes was born in Charleston, Jefferson County, Virginia, January 11, 1793. She was twice married, first to John A. Smith (father of Mrs. Gillispe) September 26, 1815. He died in 1823. She afterwards in 1828 married Thomas Keyes, Bond County, Illinois. She lived in Greenville and vicinity until the death of Mr. Keyes, which occured in 1861, after which time and until her death, made her home with her daughter. She remember the funeral cememonies held at Harpers Ferry, viriginia when George Washington died. She often related circumstances which occured during the War of 1812, being a grown woman, paticularly the battle of Blaensburg and burning of the government buildings in Washington by the British. She saw LaFayette on his secon visit to the United States in 1924. She lived during the terms of all the presidents. Burial was at Woodlawn Cemetery in Edwardsville.
