Meyer, Civil War veteran and father of State's Attorney H.A. Meyer died at his home in Hookdale February 11, 1920. Mr. Meyer was among the most prominent farms and most highly respected citizen of the county. He was born at Schaumburg, Lippe, Germany on August 21, 1843, son of Henry W. and Caroline Meyer and came in 1856 with his parents to the United States. They settle in Madison county but finally came to Bond County, where the family remained. In 1867 Wiliam Meyer settle in Tamalco Township. Prior to 1862 he worked on his father's farm, but in August of that year he offered his services to his country and served until the close of the Civil War with the 117th ILL. Vol. Infantry. He was in the battles of Spring Hill, Mississippi, Yellow Bayou and Marksville Plains, Louisiana, Chicot, Arkansas, Tupulo, Big Blue and Franklin, Missouri, Nashville, Tennesse, Fort Blakely and Spanish Fort, Alabama. On November 21, 1871 he married Susan Harter in Greenville. The wodow and the following children survive: H. A. Meyer, Mrs Emma Fox and Mrs. Henrietta Weimer of Hookdale, Mrs. Alice Rixman of Greenville, Mrs Matilda Bartelsmeyer of Centrailia, George W. and Albert J. Meyer of Tamaco Township. burial was at Paine Cemetery.
