Her father William Volentine was a soldier in the War of 1812 and participated in the Battle of New Orleans. Mrs. Ridgeway was born August 30, 1840 near New Douglas. Her mother Sophia Sugg Volentine. she was on of 23 children, only two of whom survive. They are Mrs. Janette Jones of New Douglas and Charles Volentine of Sorento. In January 1864 she was married to James S. Ridgeway and they went to housekeeping on a large farm near Pocahontas, which land Mr. Ridgeway entered from the goverment. Here they lived until the death of Mr. Ridgeway in 1904 and in 1907 Mrs. Ridgeway moved to Greenville. Four children were born to this union, two of whom survive, William Wait Ridgeway, who lives at home and Ralph Stewart Ridgeway, who resides in Pocahontas. Lettie Wise, a granddaughter, had been reared by Mrs. Ridgeway, A daughter Nannie Wise, wife of John L. Wise, and mother of Lettie died in 1908, also a son Benjamin Vollentine Ridgeway died in 1909.
