Mr. Schacht was born Jan. 29, 1847 in Friedriechodorf, Pommern, Germany, where his father taught the same school for half a century. Mr. Schacht, was a reserve in the Franco-Prussian War and at its close was honorable discharged from military service and soon came to America, landing in New York in 1871. In 1881 he settled in Pocahontas as the purchaser of the old Billy Wait flour mill. March 31, 1875 he was married to Miss Emily Grimm of Kankakee, Illinois and on Jan. 24, 1895 he was bereft of her. Ten children were born to this union and of these the survivors are Oscar of Bloomington, Indiana, Mrs. J.W. Beesonof Sorento, Mrs. J.J.Witt of Witchita, Kansas and Mrs. C. H. Elliott of Higgensville, Missouri. Ten granchildren survive. June 21, 1903, Mr. Schacht was married to Miss Linda Koch of Maine, who survives. they moved to highland in 1910.
