He was the son of Heinrick and Philippina Spies of Bavaria, Germany and was born June 30 1843 at Gaw Graueiler, Canton Rockenhausen, Rhine, Bavaria, Germany. He came to the United States when he was was 14 years old to avoid German compulsory military training. At the age of twenty years he enlisted in the U. S. Army as a member of the 3rd Ill Calvery. Unfortunately was take prisoner and treated to the hospitaly of Libby (actually Anderson) Prison, later he was exchanged and discharged. In 1866 he married Margaret Reinhardt in Shoal Creek township. He was the father of seventeen children, five whom preceded him in death. He is survived by twelve childrden. Mrs. Mary Baltz of St. Louis, George Spies of Los Angeles, California, Mrs. Christine Dressor, Philip Spies, Mrs. Kate Wylder and Mrs. Emma Oswald of near Reno, Henry Spies of St. Louis, John Spies of Greenville, Peter Spies of Stuttgardt, Arkansas, Fred Spies of Waverly, Illinois, Mrs Mae Bouillion of Wood River, 32 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren.
