He was a ritiverd farmer and Pennsylvaina Railroad Crossing Guard in the Highland area. Private funeral services will be held Friday at the Spengel-Boulanger Funereal Home, Highland, with Dr. Kenneth O. Mesle, minister of the Highland United Church of Christ, Officiating. Interment will be in the Brown cemetery, Old Ripley. No visitation. The son of Charles and Margaret (Reinhardt) Spies, he was born May 2, 1855 in Reno. He spent most of his lifetime in Bond county, moving to Highland in 1946. He was married twice. His first marriage was to Helen Dale on October of 1908 at St. Louis. She preceded him in death in Mary of 1937. On December 28, 1946 he married Edna Bielong at Waterloo. She survives. Also surviving are three Daughters, Mrs. Orville (Edith) Wernle of Sorento, Mrs. Orin (Mamie) McCracken of Donnellson and Mrs. Phillipena Kilman of Mattoon; sister Mrs. Emma Oswald at Fair Oaks Nursing Home; eight grandchildren and 23 great great grandchildren.
