Sterling, Illinois, Wednesday, November 4, 1959 Headline: Well Producing about 500 Barrel; Interest Mounts Subhead: Scores of Oil Men Attracted to City Since Last Week Pumping of oil on the William Davis farm in Buckhorn township was started about 6:30 Friday. Installation of two large storage tanks on the road south of the well and the lines leading to them has been completed. Two tank trucks, one holding 90 barrels, the other 140 barrels are trucking the oil to Kincaid, Ill. The trucks are operated by the H. E. Tracy trucking company. Improvements of some of the back hill roads in the area was also necessary to permit the large trucks to gain access to the Davis farm. The well, located in Section 8 of Buckhorn township was brought in at 10:30 a.m. October 23. It was capped, but until pumping was started, the well built up a pressure which necessitated the opening of the valve periodically. Charles (Chuck) Eager of Decatur is promoter of the well and other promoters in the enterprise with him are from Decatur. The well is located on a dome-like hill north of the Davis homestead. The storage tanks were connected to it by 1,500 feet of two-inch pipe. In the first 12 hours after pumping started over 400 barrels of oil was taken out. It has continued to produce as much or more than that since. The large trucks delivering the oil to Kincaid are averaging more than two round trips per 24 hours. Each truck is making the trip in about seven hours, making a total of over 500 barrels delivered in that period. Since the story of the discovery of oil broke last week, interest in well drilling, signing of leases and preparations to drill have intensified. Scores of oil men are now in the city attending to the hundreds of details necessary to begin drilling. One new well was expected to get underway the first part of the week, and others will no doubt follow soon. http://files.usgwarchives.net/il/brown/newspapers/barrels1.txt
