His death came as a severe shock to his relatives and many friends. Mr. and Mrs. Miller and their children had just returned to their home, after purchasing some clothing for their children, and “Tommy” was trying on some shoes on his younger child, when suddenly he slumped in his chair. Dr. McGann and Stokes were immediately called and gave stimulants, but to no avail, he passing away only a few minutes after the heart attack. Because of the suddenness of his death a coroner’s jury was empanelled, by Coroner J. G. Ash, composed of L. S. Mehl, foreman, Beverly Curry, Harry Tolle, Francis Young, D. A. Veith and Otis Williams, and the verdict returned was that “Thomas S. Miller came to his death from organic heart trouble, contracted during his service in the World War.” Thomas S. Miller was born about 30 years ago, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Miller of Mt. Sterling, where he grew to manhood. For a number of years he was employed by George Hense in the poultry business, and after our country declared war he offered his services, enlisting in the National Guard. He was immediately assigned to guard duty at the Valley City bridge, being stationed there several weeks, and was transferred to San Antonio, Texas. Here he joined the 33rd Division, and was taken overseases, serving faithfully and well in many of the major conflicts. It was during his service that his heart gave him trouble, and after his discharge, having served almost three years, he returned to Mt. Sterling. After his return, his health was always impaired and he was almost constantly under the doctor’s care. During the past few months, his condition had gradually weakened. He was married to Miss Sarah McDaniel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William McDanniel, of this city about ten years ago, and they have always made Mt. Sterling their home. Besides his widow, he leaves to mourn his death three children, two daughters Mary Frances and Alberta, and a son, Robert; also his father Frank Miller; and a brother, Roscoe, of Roosevelt L. I. His mother preceded him in death a number of years ago. Thomas Miller was one of the charter members of the local Post of The American Legion and has always been faithful in his attendance on all occasions when the Legion was called. His “buddies” will certainly miss him. No arrangements have been made for the funeral, awaiting word from his brother in New York.
