Fifteenth Annual Report of the State Bureau of Labor Statistics, 1896
On January 13, 1896, at Marquette Coal Co.’s mine, Marquette, Bureau county, 
Edward Sweeney, miner, married, aged 37 years; was fatally injured by a fall of 
coal in his room. He was setting a prop when the ‘sprag’ that was supporting the 
coal gave way, allowing the coal to fall on him. He lived until the 19th. Deceased 
leaves a wife and four children. One boy able to work.
