Biography of Henry C BEAR, Champaign County, Illinois

HENRY C. BEAR

Mr. BEAR, the present supervisor of Compromise township, was born 
in Cumberland county, Pennsylvania, at Mount Rock, December 7th, 
1838. His ancestors were of Swiss-German descent, and had lived in 
that part of Pennsylvania for several generations. The fall of 1853
the family moved to Macon county, Illinois. Mr. Bear was married 
November 17th, 1859, to Miss L. J. LIKINS, daughter of John L. LIKINS
of Macon county; she is a native of Ohio. He was farming in Macon 
county till 1862. August 15th of that year he enlisted in Co. A, 
116th Illinois Infantry. His regiment was attached to the 15th Army 
Corps. He was in the battles of Chickasaw Bayou, Arkansas Post, 
Walnut Hill, Champion Hill, Black river, and the siege of Vicksburg.
May 19th, 1863, in the first charge on the works at Vicksburg he was
wounded in the right side; the ball has never been extracted, and he
lay in the hospital till his discharge in June, 1865.

At the close of the war he returned to Macon county. In 1869 he settled 
in Compromise township, on Section 17, Township 21, Range 14, West. 
In politics he was a Republican from the time he was capable of taking
any interest in such matters, and as long as the questions of slavery 
and freedom were at issue, warmly supported the Republican party, on 
financial questions. He has, however, opposed the policy of that 
organization, and is a member of the National Greenback party. He was 
elected supervisor of Compromise township in 1871, served three 
consecutive years at that time, and was again elected in the spring 
of 1878.
