Biography of J J BOGARDUS, Champaign County, Illinois

J. J. BOGARDUS - This gentleman, who has been a resident of the city of
Champaign since 1860, was born in Onondago county, New York, December 6th,
1829.  His ancestors were among the earliest Holland Dutch settlers of New
York city, and the history of the family dates back seven generations to
one Everardus BOGARDUS.  Mr. Bogardus was raised near Syracuse, New York,
and in the year 1852, married Eveline BUTTERFIELD, who was born and raised
at Old Pompey Hill near Syracuse.  Immediately after his marriage he
removed to Illinois and settled near Belvidere in Boone county.  In 1869 he
removed to Champaign.  In connection with his partner, Jacob JOHNSON, he
engaged extensively in the broom-corn business, and they were the first to
embark in it in this county.  They have since carried on an extensive
business, raising about six hundred acres every year, employing a large
number of hands, and shipping their product to Chicago and eastern cities.
In politics he has been a Republican.  He has had five children, of whom
three are living.  He holds a good position among the business men of
Champaign.
