Biography of V ARNOLD, Champaign County, Illinois

V. ARNOLD

The subject of our present sketch, V. ARNOLD, is one of the leading 
and representative farmers of Condit township. He was born in Licking 
county, Ohio, December 14th, 1821, and was the son of Charles and 
Elizabeth ARNOLD.

Charles Arnold was a native of New Jersey, his father, Jacob ARNOLD, 
was a hotel-keeper in Morristown, and Washington made his headquarters 
with him while he was there encamped on Mt. Washington.

During the revolutionary war, Jacob Arnold was also a colonel in the
revolutionary war, and for many years sheriff of Morris county, New 
Jersey.

During his incumbency of his office, he, in obedience to the laws,
superintended the execution of several horse thieves.

During the early part of Mr. Arnold's life, he was on a farm. At the 
age of sixteen, he entered a boot, shoe and leather house, to learn 
the business.

Including his apprenticeship of five years, he was engaged in that 
business for twenty-eight years, at Galena, Delaware county, Ohio. He 
continued in that business until 1865, when he turned it over to his 
sons, and then immediately removed to Champaign, this county, where 
they have a fine establishment.

He was united in marriage to Miss Ann M. CONDIT, April 11th, 1843, 
the daughter of Wickliff CONDIT, of Licking county, Ohio. By this 
union they have a family of five children, two boys and three girls. 
J. B. and J. A. in Champaign; Julia, now the wife of George A. BARTON, 
living in Kansas; Sarah R., now living at home; Emma Louisa, now 
the wife of Rev. Robert STEVENSON, living in Pa.

Mr. Arnold came to this county, from Ohio, with his family, in the 
spring of 1865. He improved a farm where he now lives, section 16, 
Condit township. He now has a farm, of three hundred and sixty acres, 
under a fine state of cultivation, with good, substantial buildings; 
the most of it was taken from the raw prairie only twelve years ago.

Mr. Arnold is identified with the Democratic party in his political
affiliations, and was formerly a Whig, and cast his first presidential 
vote for Henry Clay.

He and his wife are members of the Presbyterian Church.

Characterized by industry and integrity, Mr. Arnold has gained a 
competency of this world's goods, which he is, in his latter days, 
enjoying, on his fine farm, having brought nature's original domain, 
to be one of the best cultivated and improved farms in the township.

Quiet and unassuming in his manners, genial in disposition, he dispenses 
a liberal hospitality with the ease and grace of the olden time.
